Imagine you're in a meeting and you get a text from a family member. "Please call me. It's urgent." You get up to excuse yourself, and a colleague asks you to stay to finish the current topic.

"I'm sorry. I need to make an urgent family call," you reply.

"What's more important to you? Family, or finishing this conversation?" they reply.

You're stuck in a trust disconnect! Yes - most people would put their family first in this situation and (we hope) most other people would be understanding.

But while "family" may be a personal value of yours, perhaps the other fictional person in this scenario may have "hard work" as a personal value.

The reality is, trust is a 2-way street. We have to:

  1. Have a clear understanding of what is important to us.
  2. Believe that others will respect that
  3. Be able to predict the behavior of others by understand (and respecting) what is important to them
  4. Understand how our common beliefs guide our team decisions.

Understand personal values

Our work starts with helping each person develop an understanding of their own unique set of core values, and sharing that with their team so we can respect the unique values within the team.

Develop values stories

We create space for teams to share their individual values stories. This often yields new insights into each person and the core of what is important to them.

Identify common values

We help teams understand the common values that exist within the team. This yields insights into potential strengths, blindspots and reasons why individual may connect or feel alienated.

Develop team values

We help teams develop core values that represent acceptable behaviors within the team and also understand the hidden and unspoken values that identify unacceptable behavior.

Establish actions

We work with teams to develop actions and behaviors that ensure accountability to their core values.

Ongoing support

We partner with teams to checkin on how their values are being respected, and how they continue to evolve.

The power of a values story

One of our clients shard this story during one of our sessions and has allowed us to share it here. We hope it resonates with you as much as it did with their team.

My Value: Hard Work

My father was a bricklayer who started work at age fifteen.  It was all he had ever known - hard, back-breaking work, that was never valued as much as it should be. He worked seven days a week from dawn to dusk to support us as a family, and even with that, we knew times of housing and food uncertainty.

He and my mother also built our home. Really built it. They laid every brick, installed every window, painted every wall. It was small by today's standards with a single bathroom, but to us it was a palace.

Our house was always filled with love.

When I twelve, I started working, finally able to earn money to spend on small luxuries for myself. And in 40 years, I've never stopped. I've sometimes worked 2 or 3 jobs to support my own family.

Working hard to provide a stable home for my family is just who I am.

The outcome

Once our client shared the story, there were a few small laughs and many smiles around the room. Finally, one of their colleagues spoke up.

"We always wondered why you worked so hard, and why you expected as much from the people who work for you. Thank you so much for sharing."
