Leading (People Through) Change

Achieve your goals with a 5K and avoid the marathon!

If we could eliminate one phrase from the business dictionary, it would be "leading" change." Great leaders recognize that you don't lead change, you lead people through change.

People adapt to each change at different speeds.

Imagine your CEO asks you all to run a 5K race.  Everyone will react to that challenge differently, as we have discussed in the nine minute audio interview.

Your task as a leader of people in change is to engage each of the distinct change groups and get them to your destination feeling confident in their ability to succeed.

Missing

The "missing" group will be the people flat out avoiding the change, or simply saying "no." They may even sabotage your change, and at the very least they will be the last to change.

Cheerers

Cheerers will stand at the sidelines as long as possible, waiting to "see what happens", and frankly, hoping the change will just go away. They will applaud quietly, and will need a lot of convincing to take their first steps.

Walkers

Your walkers prefer a more measured approach. They will get there eventually, but will want to understand what they are walking into and perhaps see others change first.

Runners

Your runners are your steady adopters. Once they feel they understand the change and can be successful, they will move with you to the finish line. They may moan a little along the way.

Racers

Your racers are your change champions who are energized by the change and can get frustrated if things don't move quickly enough.

It is important to understand that people will likely be in different change groups depending on the specific change and what other pressures they face.

A multi-step process

Before you even start to lead the change, we partner with you to ensure you and your leadership team are clear on the change and are committed and communicating the change in the same way.

Once the change itself is clear, we help you identify change tactics to use with each change group to help them achieve success as quickly as possible.

We also challenge you to overcome your natural preferences. Many leaders love working with the Racers, but find it more difficult to engage the Walkers and Cheerers, who may form the majority of the change participants.
